Chez le coiffeur

We took our little guy to get his first haircut this weekend...the baby mullet is officially gone ! With a little help from Daddy's iPhone, it was over in 5 min (this kid loves watching videos of himself). Somebody made quite an impression this morning at daycare (although people were probably just relieved we finally cut his hair)...

I hope you had a great weekend, can you believe we're only 4 weeks away from Xmas ?? Crazy !

Bon weekend !

Hi there !

I hope you're all having a lovely weekend so far... We're enjoying the long Thanksgiving weekend and it's so nice to finally have 4 days to relax... We put up our Xmas tree last night (yay !) and little O didn't really understand that once you've put the decorations on the tree they're supposed to stay there and not go back in their box just yet... So it took us longer than expected but it was fun. I love decorating the house for Xmas, definitely one of the best part of the Thanksgiving weekend !

Ok dears, here are a few things that caught my eyes this week :

- beautiful hand painted baubles (via Solid Frog), it might be time for me to update our Ikea Xmas ornaments... just a thought
- very interesting documentary about trends and influencers (watch it here it's only 14 min long) (via Kenza Lab)
- a cool way to recycle Legos
- cute felt necklaces (and great Etsy store) (via Oh Joy!)
- 2 lovely prints (in French !)

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and see you on Monday

Happy Thanksgiving !

Happy Thanksgiving everyone !

I realized last night that this is my 5th Thanksgiving !! Where did time go ?

On my first one, there was a lot of first : first time I went to Florida, first time I met my in-laws, and first real Thanksgiving meal... I had a blast until my father-in-law suggested that because it was all new to me that I should be the one STUFFING THE DAMN TURKEY ! I have to tell you I've never been a big fan of meat in general, and that the idea of 1) touching raw meat and 2) stuffing my hand down there weren't very appealing to me... Anyway, I did it in effort to look like a really cool open-minded daughter-in-law.

Second Thanksgiving, we stayed in Boston and V. took me to this amazing fancy restaurant, the food was so delicious I still remember everything we ate that day

Third one, we stayed in Boston again, my in-laws came over from Florida and we went back to the amazing restaurant. I was 4 months pregnant with a MASSIVE craving on mashed potatoes and sweets, so let me tell you it was my BEST Thanksgiving of all times !

Thanksgiving number 4, last year, we had a few expat friends over, we initially wanted to cook but ended up ordering most of it from WholeFoods (it was so good by the way)...

And today, it's my fifth Thanksgiving and once again, we stayed home. The little guy is playing with his cars while V. is cooking and the turkey is in the oven... We just got back from a trip to the park, it was so cold out, it just feels great to be home.

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving, enjoy the long weekend
And if you're not American, as I read it last night on Little Brown Pen, just eat something rich and fattening just for fun.

Miam ! Quick fancy sandwich

Well ok it's not super fancy but it looks like it, doesn't it ?
This has become my go-to dinner/lunch/brunch when I don't feel like cooking at all.
So easy, it's ridiculous...

The original recipe is from Cooking Light magazine but here's a slightly easier and faster version of it :

You need (for 4 servings):
4 slices good country bread
2 cups fresh arugula
1 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
4 large eggs
3/4 cup ricotta cheese
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon thyme
olive oil - salt - pepper

Step 1 : combine arugula with lemon juice + a bit of olive oil + salt + pepper
Step 2 : combine ricotta with parmesan + thyme + a bit of salt
Step 3 : fry eggs
Step 4 : spread ricotta mix over bread slices + add arugula + 1 egg per slice + a bit of salt and pepper

Voilà !! Bon appétit !

Bon week end !

Hello everyone ! How is your weekend so far ? I hope nice and relaxing like mine...
Today, I'm going to take little O on a little Xmas shopping trip with me (we'll see if that's a good idea or not) and then we'll try to make some sugar cookies together, yum !

Here are a few lovely things from my week on the web, hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

- beautiful Xmas wreath (with diy tutorial)... it reminds me of this gorgeous rug (via Creature Comforts)
- those awesome hanging beds...I also love the yellow-navy-grey combo, so nice together
- lovely heart cardigan (via Coline)
- some French for the week
- this map reminds me of middle school but turns out to be a brilliant idea for a white wall

Have a lovely Sunday !!

Miam ! (or maybe not)

Adorable dollhouse miniature pastries by Pei Li... Don't they look so real ?

Award !!

Wowwwww !! I won an award yesterday !!
Yep, the Versatile Blogger Award from the beautiful Jaclyn (this tee shirt is for you lady)
So what does it means, I'm not sure but what I know if that I have to share with you 7 things about my little person and then pass the award along to 7 blogs that I love.

So here we go :

1- I'm superstitious. Horoscopes are the first thing I read in any magazines and I wear 'lucky' outfits when I have a big day at work involving public speaking (or when I'm getting a root canal like the other day)
2- I'm always cold. And I'm married to the biggest AC lover ever...to save our marriage I got a Snuggie to watch TV and I'm proud of it (the leopard one, please)
3- I'm scared of everything, e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g
4- I got married twice with the same guy and had a baby in between weddings
5- I don't know how to walk in high heels...and I'm 30...
6- When I was 6, my mom told me while making dinner that BOTH Santa and the Tooth Fairy didn't exist... I had doubts already about Santa but the Tooth Fairy, man, I was crushed
7- Around the same age I fell crazy in love with the guy that played Richie Valens in the movie La Bamba, not that my mom would let me see the movie but the guy was on the cover of the record... Even though he was Mexican, nobody in my family was surprised when I got married to a Puerto Rican guy... Go figure

And now, I'm passing this amazing award along to :

Mommy shorts
Express-O
Pottymouthmama
Paul & Paula
My poppet
Village
Jasmin on Jupiter

Have a great Thursday everyone

French Elle Best Dressed 2010

clockwise : Marion Cotillard - Charlotte Gainsbourg - Clémence Poésy - Vanessa Paradis

Hi everyone ! How was your week end ? Mine was definitely relaxing as I managed to get some serious sleep (y-a-y !)

I saw something interesting this morning, right now on Elle.fr you can vote for the 2010 best dressed French woman...
Here's my little top 4, I couldn't pick just one sorry !

My perfect wardrobe would definitely be a mix of all 4 styles : glamorous pieces from Marion, Charlotte's effortlessly cool tee-shirt/jeans/boots uniforms, Vanessa's boho chic dresses and scarves and Clémence's modern lady like pieces (sigh !)

Do you have a favorite ? and do you have a style icon ?
I have to say I have a secret girl crush on Alexa Chung, and no just because she gave her name to the coolest bag ever made...

Bon week end

Hooray it’s Friday !!
My dears, how was your week ? what are your plans for the weekend ?

Our main plan this week end is to SLEEP !! The little guy has been a bit disturbed by the time change last week end so he’s been waking up very very early everyday this past week…

I just want to be this cat and take a long nap on the couch… not realistic with a toddler at home but oh well, a girl can dream !

Here are a few lovely things from my week on the web :

- I’ve been obsessed with this cover of ‘teenage dream’, way way better than the original

- The cutest baby ninja I’ve ever seen (ok… she’s the only one I’ve seen but still she’s too funny)

- I’ve been on a mission lately to get the house organized and I could use the help of these cool chalkboard stickers

- Talking about taking a nap, I would take a book and a blanket and go here for a couple hours (not the one above the water, too scary for me, the one in the tree close to the ground)

- Gosh, I really wish I was living in Portland, OR so I could have gone to the little winter handmade market, looks so damn cute...

Have a relaxing and cozy week end, stay warm !

Miam ! Sushi party !!

This past week end, our friend Yoshi came over to our house to show us how to make sushi and let me tell you I was SO excited !!

First stop : getting the fish... Yoshi knew a place where we could get amazing fresh fish, so we went there and got some tuna, salmon, yellowtail, crab, shrimp and fresh ginger.

Second stop : Japanese supermarket... Here we got some rice vinegar, soy sauce, rice, dry seaweed (in sheets for the sushi and in small pieces for the miso soup), miso paste, tofu, scallions, frozen edamame, sesame seeds (optional) and some kiwi gummy candies just because I like them.

We then went home and start prepping the food which turned out to be fairly easy as the fish had already been cut in slices at the store, and all I had to do was to cut some avocado, cucumber and scallions while Yoshi was making the sushi rice.
Go Yoshi !

Sushi rice :
for 6 people, you need approximately 4 cups of dried rice
Wash the rice 3 times until the water is clear (and not white)
Place it in the rice cooker (but you could boil it too)
Add some water (1 cup of rice = 1.2-1.5 cup of water) (precise instructions courtesy of Yoshi) (be careful not to put too much water, you don't want the rice to be too soft)
Let rice soak in water for 15-20 min  and then cook it for another 20 min
When the rice is cooked, add some rice vinegar and mix it well (100ml for 3 cups of rice, we used 1/3 cup here)
Put in a bowl and cover with a tea towel (so it doesn't dry out)

While the rice was soaking/cooking, we prep the edamame (open bag-pour in boiling water-drain-add salt, that's it) and started to make the miso soup (my favorite !)

Yoshi in action and me pretending to be doing something helpful in the kitchen

Miso soup :
Boil some water
Add dry seaweed and tofu cut in cubes (or any other shape you like)
Bring the water to a boil again and then turn it off
Start adding miso paste (SLOWLY) (here we added 2 big tablespoons)
Add scallions and some sesame seeds
(if you have some leftover for the next day, reheat the soup without boiling it)

After that (and after I ate all the kiwi gummy candies) we were finally ready to start eating and drinking.

My friend Sophie showed off her perfect sushi-matching manicure (love that color !)

And Yoshi showed us how to make some temaki  (the easiest way to make sushi really, you can't go wrong and also because we forgot to get a bamboo mat to make maki at the store). So it goes this way : take some seaweed cut in half (or a quarter but that was a tiny bit small), spread some sushi rice (not too much), add fish and whatever you want, roll, dip in soy sauce, eat
Super simple and super delicious...

You can also make nigiri (rice with fish on top) and maki (roll) fairly easily once you have all of the above ready. I found this great video that explains how to make those.

Do you like sushi ? Have ever tried to make some ?? I actually found the whole thing to be much easier than I thought... Obviously it's easier when somebody is showing you (thanks Yoshi !)

And guess what, today is sushi day at work (I'm serious) so I'm about to pay a visit to my 2 favorite Japanese people (after Yoshi of course) downstairs at the cafeteria

Finger puppets

Last week I took the little man to Ikea with me and to keep him distracted while sitting in the cart I got him some hand puppets that he instantly adopted as the best toys ever.
I can't imagine how crazy he would go over these adorable animal finger puppets...
Such a great toy for babies and toddlers. Even better, they are hand knitted by certified fair trade women’s collective in Peru.
I especially like the Kangaroo and Koala ones... How about you ?

More of those here

5 signs my French sucks

- my 2 sisters call me Jean-Claude VanDamme (the original king of Franglais)
- my mum brought me some French grammar books last time she came over (sympa, merci)
- I can't make a proper sentence when I call the bank back home (and I look like an idiot on the phone)
- My co-workers have learnt one French word from me because I say it all the time : 'Marie, what does 'putain' means ?'
- My English is actually getting better (including my accent): no-one understand 'sex-sex' when I say 'success' anymore (yay ! that saves me some serious embarrassment at work)

I can't believe this is happening to me, nobody told me that I could ever forget my first language !

Tell me, do you speak any foreign language ? Do you or did you ever get confused switching from one language to another ?
